What to Do with That Old Computer

Every company has those old computers sitting around that haven’t been used for years – those backups of backups of backups. And, of course, no one ever gets around to throwing them away, because doing so is a hassle.

Well, it doesn’t have to be! There are actually some useful and innovative ways to repurpose old computers.

Try Out That New OS

If you have an old computer that has become too slow to use for everyday business, replace the old OS with a lighter one such as Linux. Systems like this don’t take up as many of the old computer’s resources. Because of this, you can use it to run a single system or maybe as a backup server to reduce downtime. Now, instead of gathering dust in a dark corner of the office, that old computer is a useful and productive machine helping to keep your business’ productivity up.

Donate It

Let’s say you already tried out a different OS, but you still have computers left over with no clear uses. Don’t throw them away yet! Instead, donate them to a good cause. There are many different charities such as Best Buys E-Cycle Program and the National Christina Foundation. There more innovative ways to donate your computer, but wherever you decide to send it, that old computer will definitely go to better use than it will just sitting in your office. And don’t wait! As you know, technology changes very fast, so the longer you wait, the less valuable the computer becomes to charities.

Before doing this, though, it is essential that you remove/replace the hard drive. You don’t want any confidential information going out with that computer.

Recycle It

If you have exhausted your options for using that computer for your business, and, for one reason or another, the old computer can’t be donated, then go ahead and trash it. That being said, there is a specific methodology that you should follow as your discarded old computer can have a serious environmental impact. It is recommended that you simply use a recycler like e-Stewards to get rid of it. It’s simple, and you can walk away with a clean conscience knowing it won’t end up in some landfill. Again, make sure to remove your hard drive and any personal information.

All these are great options, but before you stop using old computers, make sure you wait until they are completely unusable. Don’t waste money getting the company new computers just because a newer and faster version came out. Be responsible with your old computers, and have some fun finding ways to use them.
